Ornellaia 2005 blend: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot

Ornellaia is a Bordeaux-style red from Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. The estate farms 99 hectares across two sites, Ornellaia and Bellaria, at 50 to 120 metres above sea level. Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot cover 38 hectares each, Cabernet Franc 12 and Petit Verdot 7. Soils are marine, alluvial and volcanic.

From Lodovico Antinori’s 1981 estate to Frescobaldi’s 2005 buyout

Lodovico Antinori founded the estate in 1981 and the first Ornellaia vintage was 1985. Robert Mondavi Winery took a minority stake in November 1999, and from February 2002 Mondavi and Frescobaldi were 50-50 partners. Constellation Brands acquired The Robert Mondavi Corporation on 22 December 2004, and Frescobaldi bought the remaining half of the estate on 1 April 2005, which makes this a Tuscany wine from the first harvest under full Frescobaldi ownership. The Ornellaia vintages of 1999, 2000, 2001 and 2004 were all made before Frescobaldi became sole owner, so the 2005 stands as the turning point for the estate on the Tuscan coast.
