Ornellaia 1999: the last vintage before Mondavi bought in
The 1999 Ornellaia is the estate’s flagship red from the 1999 harvest, made before the Frescobaldi family became sole owner. It comes from the Bolgheri appellation on the Tuscan coast and is a dry red of three varieties: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. The bottle is a 1.5 L magnum, double the standard 0.75 L size.

Antinori, Mondavi and Frescobaldi: ownership around the 1999 harvest
Marchese Lodovico Antinori founded the estate in 1981, and the first Ornellaia vintage was 1985. Robert Mondavi Winery took a minority stake in November 1999.

Le Serre Nuove, Le Volte and Masseto beside the 1999
By the 1999 harvest the estate already made other wines. Le Volte had been produced since 1991, and Le Serre Nuove, the second wine, since 1997. Masseto, a Merlot from a 7 hectare vineyard, was first made in 1986 and began at the estate. It is now made by a separate team.

Bolgheri DOC around 1999
This bottle is classed as DOC. The Bolgheri DOC dates from 1983, and its current red-wine regulations from 1994, so the appellation was already in force when the 1999 was harvested.
The 1999 vintage in Bolgheri
The vintage chart scores Bolgheri Superiore 1999 at 94 and marks it R, which means ready to drink. The 94 rates the vintage in the region, not this bottle.
