Solaia 1998: a vintage Antinori chose to make

Marchesi Antinori makes the wine only in exceptional vintages, and 1998 is not among the years it skipped: 1980, 1981, 1983, 1984 and 1992. The bottle is a dry red, 0.75 L. The Antinori family dates its winemaking to 1385, and today Renzo Cotarella is CEO and chief winemaker of the company, with Piero Antinori as honorary president. The company is headquartered at Bargino, in San Casciano val di Pesa near Florence.

Its classification is IGT, the Italian geographical indication category, and it comes from Tuscany.

The Tignanello hillside vineyard

The Solaia vineyard covers 20 ha at 350-400 m above sea level, with southwestern exposure, on the hillside of Tenuta Tignanello between the Greve and Pesa valleys. The soils are alberese, a hard limestone, and galestro, a flaky calcareous clay.

Tenuta Tignanello as a whole covers about 319 ha, of which about 165 ha are under vine. Solaia takes 20 ha of that land, and the separate Tignanello vineyard, about 77 ha, sits at the same 350-400 m with limestone-rich soils. Tignanello, the estate’s other red, was first produced in 1970, eight years before Solaia.

From the 1978 first vintage to the 1998 blend

Solaia was first made in 1978. The first blend, for 1978 and 1979, was 80% Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% Cabernet Franc. In the following years 20% Sangiovese was added and the Cabernet ratio adjusted until the current formula was fixed.

The estate ages Solaia about 15 months in new French oak barrels, with lots aged separately before blending.
