Solaia 1999 from three grapes

Antinori Solaia 1999 is a dry red from Tuscany, labelled IGT, made from Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Sangiovese.

Solaia was not made in 1980, 1981, 1983, 1984 and 1992, so 1999 is a produced vintage. The first vintage of Solaia was 1978.

From 80% Cabernet in 1978 to a Sangiovese blend

Solaia is made only in exceptional vintages. The first blend of 1978 and 1979 was 80% Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% Cabernet Franc. Sangiovese at 20% was added in the following years, and the Cabernet ratio was adjusted until the present formula was fixed.

Alberese and galestro on the Tignanello hillside

The vineyard covers 20 hectares at 350 to 400 metres above sea level, facing south-west, on the hillside of Tenuta Tignanello, which lies between the Greve and Pesa river valleys. The soils are alberese, a hard limestone, and galestro, a flaky calcareous clay. The estate ages Solaia for about 15 months in new French oak, with lots aged separately before blending. Tenuta Tignanello covers about 319 hectares, of which about 165 hectares are under vine. Tignanello comes from the same estate. Its vineyard is about 77 hectares, at the same 350 to 400 metres as Solaia, and its current blend has been unchanged since 1982.

The producer, Marchesi Antinori, is a family company that dates its winemaking to 1385, when Giovanni di Piero Antinori joined the Florentine winemakers’ guild. Its headquarters are at Bargino in San Casciano val di Pesa, near Florence.
