Solaia vineyard: 20 ha of alberese and galestro at Tignanello

The Solaia vineyard covers 20 ha at 350-400 m above sea level, with a southwestern exposure, on the hillside of Tenuta Tignanello, which lies between the Greve and Pesa river valleys. The soils are alberese, a hard limestone, and galestro, a flaky calcareous clay. The Tignanello vineyard is about 77 ha, at the same 350-400 m with the same southwestern exposure. Tenuta Tignanello as a whole covers about 319 ha, of which about 165 ha are under vine. The Antinori family dates its winemaking to 1385. The company is headquartered at Bargino, in San Casciano val di Pesa near Florence, and Renzo Cotarella is its CEO and chief winemaker.

The estate ages Solaia for about 15 months in new French oak barrels, with lots aged separately before blending.

Solaia since 1978: skipped years and the blend

Solaia was first produced in 1978 and it is made only in exceptional vintages. Antinori skipped Solaia in 1980, 1981, 1983, 1984 and 1992; 2003 was released.

The first blend, in 1978-1979, was 80% Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% Cabernet Franc. Sangiovese, at 20%, was introduced in the following years, and the Cabernet ratio was adjusted until the current formula was fixed.
