Font de Michelle Châteauneuf-du-Pape 1998 from Bédarrides
The 1998 from Domaine Font de Michelle is a dry red from the AOC Châteauneuf-du-Pape, made from Grenache, Mourvedre and Syrah. The estate is based in Bédarrides, one of the five communes of the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation, in the Southern Rhone. The bottle is 0.75 L.
The estate makes two red Châteauneuf-du-Pape cuvées, Tradition and Cuvée Etienne Gonnet, and also makes Côtes-du-Rhône and Côtes-du-Rhône Villages.

The Gonnet family and the estate
Etienne Gonnet created Font de Michelle in 1950. His sons Jean and Michel took over after his death, and in 1988 they made the first Cuvée Etienne Gonnet as a tribute to their father. The cousins Guillaume and Bertrand Gonnet, the third generation, took charge in 2006. The Gonnet family has been rooted in Bédarrides since the 1600s.
Grenache covers nearly 70% of the estate’s planted area. Syrah, Mourvedre, Cinsault, Terret, Counoise and Muscardin make up the rest of the red plantings.

Bédarrides and the appellation rules
The appellation was created on 15 May 1936, one of the first six French AOCs. Its rules require at least 12.5% alcohol, cap yields at 35 hl/ha and forbid chaptalisation. Soils across the appellation range from sand and gravel to rounded pebbles over red clay; the pebbles absorb heat by day and release it at night.
The appellation allows thirteen varieties by tradition. Grenache covered 72% of Châteauneuf-du-Pape vineyard surface in 2004; it covers nearly 70% of the estate’s plantings.
