Concrete for the Grenache, wood for the Syrah and Mourvèdre

Fermentation takes place in concrete tanks, and the reds are mostly destemmed. Macerations average about 35 days.

Ageing differs by variety. The Grenache spends about 12 months in concrete, while the Syrah and Mourvèdre spend about 12 months in barriques or demi-muids.

Not the Vieilles Vignes

The estate also bottled a separate 2016 Vieilles Vignes from older vines, with the same Grenache-led blend. It was released only for the US market. This bottle is the base Châteauneuf-du-Pape and should not be confused with it.

The Maurel brothers and the La Crau plateau

About 60% sit on the La Crau plateau, where rolled stones (galets roulés) cover the surface, and about 40% on alluvial clay and sandy soils beside it. The estate covers 47 ha.
