Domaine des Relagnes Châteauneuf-du-Pape 1998: a vintage made under the Boiron family
This bottle was made before the estate changed hands. The property belonged to the Boiron family from the early 18th century until 2006, when Henri Boiron sold it. The 1998 vintage of Domaine des Relagnes therefore comes from the Boiron era, not from the Kessler family that owns the estate today.
It is a dry red from the AOC Châteauneuf-du-Pape in Vaucluse, sold in the standard 0.75 L bottle. Under the Relagnes name the estate made a plain Châteauneuf-du-Pape red as well as La Cuvée Vigneronne and a Vieilles Vignes bottling.
What the 2006 sale left behind: Hillaire’s La Crau vines
Around the time of the 2006 sale the estate was put at roughly 16–18 ha. The 2006 sale did not include every vineyard: a La Crau parcel of 100-year-old vines stayed with the winemaker Olivier Hillaire.
Galets and sandy-clay-limestone: the ground under the Relagnes vines
The estate’s soils are sandy-clay-limestone. The appellation around it is known for rounded pebbles over red clay, which absorb heat by day and release it at night. More bottles from the region are in Southern Rhone.
