Where the Chambertin comes from

Chambertin became a Grand Cru appellation on 31 July 1937 for red wine from Pinot Noir. Chambertin has 13.14 ha in production and an average output of 449 hl a year, about 59,700 bottles. The name goes back to “Champ de Bertin”, Bertin’s field, a man who planted vines next to the monks’ Clos de Bèze.

Rousseau’s Chambertin comes from three east-facing parcels and a fourth, Larrey, at the edge of the woods, which can only be worked with a horse and plough. Armand Rousseau bought the first vines; his son Charles added more.

How the estate makes and ages it

The estate ages its Chambertin in 100% new oak barrels. Its wines are fermented in open stainless-steel vats for about 18 to 20 days, about 90% of the grapes are destemmed, and all wines spend 18 months in barrel with two rackings before bottling, usually in April.

Domaine Armand Rousseau today

The estate is based in Gevrey-Chambertin and is run by Eric Rousseau with his daughter Cyrielle. Its range of 11 wines includes the Burgundy Grand Crus Clos de Bèze, Charmes-Chambertin, Mazis-Chambertin and Clos de la Roche.
