The Clos de Bèze parcels

The land was given to the monks of the Abbey of Bèze in the year 630, and the Clos is still enclosed by old stone walls. Chambertin-Clos de Bèze became a Grand Cru appellation on 31 July 1937. The estate holds 1.42 ha here, in two parcels, the larger in the upper part of the Clos.

The soils are stony and high in limestone. Bathonian clay-limestone lies at the top, Bajocian crinoidal limestone and marl halfway down. Charles Rousseau added Clos de Bèze parcels to the domaine after taking it over in 1959.

How the domaine works today

Domaine Armand Rousseau is based in Gevrey-Chambertin and farms only Pinot Noir. Fermentation runs about 18 to 20 days in open stainless-steel vats. About 90% of the grapes are destemmed. Malolactic fermentation takes place naturally in oak barrels from the Allier forest.

The estate ages Clos de Bèze in 100% new oak on average, and all its wines spend 18 months in barrel with two rackings. Today the domaine is run by Eric Rousseau and his daughter Cyrielle.
