Chambertin-Clos de Bèze at Rousseau

Chambertin-Clos de Bèze became a Grand Cru appellation on 31 July 1937. The appellation has 15 ha in production. The domaine’s share is 1.42 ha in two parcels, the larger in the upper part of the Clos. The soils are stony and rich in limestone.

The appellation produces an average of 500 hl a year, about 66,500 bottles. Wine from Chambertin-Clos de Bèze may legally be sold under the name Chambertin.

The land was given to the monks of the Abbey of Bèze in the year 630. The Clos is still enclosed by old stone walls. Charles Rousseau added Clos de Bèze parcels after taking over the domaine in 1959.

Destemming, gravity and new Allier oak

All of the estate’s vines are Pinot Noir. About 90% of the grapes are destemmed. The wine goes by gravity into oak barrels from the Allier forest, where malolactic fermentation takes place naturally. Clos de Bèze is aged in 100% new oak on average, for 18 months with two rackings.

Fermentation takes place in open stainless-steel vats for about 18 to 20 days. The wines are usually bottled in April after a light plate filtration.

The domaine is run today by Eric Rousseau with his daughter Cyrielle. More wines from the region are in Burgundy.
