Clos de Bèze: a 15 ha appellation with 1.42 ha of Rousseau

The appellation was created on 31 July 1937. The appellation covers 15 ha in production, with an average of about 66,500 bottles a year. Rousseau’s 1.42 ha is therefore about a tenth of it. The land belonged to the monks of the Abbey of Bèze from the year 630 and is still enclosed by old stone walls. The soil of its parcels is stony and rich in limestone.

The wine is made from Pinot Noir. About 90% of the grapes are destemmed. The wines go by gravity into oak barrels from the Allier forest, where malolactic fermentation takes place naturally. The estate ages its Clos de Bèze in 100% new oak on average, for 18 months with two rackings, and usually bottles it in April.
