Clos de Bèze: a walled Gevrey-Chambertin Grand Cru since 1937

The appellation is a Grand Cru in the commune of Gevrey-Chambertin, in the Côte de Nuits of Burgundy, created on 31 July 1937 for red wine from Pinot Noir. The land was given to the monks of the Abbey of Bèze in the year 630, and old stone walls still enclose the Clos. The soils of its own parcels are stony and rich in limestone: Bathonian clay-limestone at the top, Bajocian crinoidal limestone and marl halfway down.

Rousseau’s Clos de Bèze methods: open vats and 18 months in barrel

Fermentation runs about 18 to 20 days in open stainless-steel vats, and the wine is aged 18 months with two rackings. Clos de Bèze goes into 100% new oak barrels on average. The vines are all Pinot Noir, cropped at 30 to 40 hl/ha.
