Where Chambertin-Clos de Bèze comes from

Chambertin-Clos de Bèze was made a Grand Cru appellation on 31 July 1937. It has 15 ha in production and an average output of about 66,500 bottles a year. The land was given to the monks of the Abbey of Bèze in the year 630. The Clos is still enclosed by old stone walls.

Rousseau owns 1.42 ha here, in two parcels, the larger in the upper part of the Clos. The soils are stony and high in limestone: Bathonian clay-limestone at the top, Bajocian crinoidal limestone and marl halfway down. Charles Rousseau added these parcels after he took over the domaine in 1959.

How the estate works in Gevrey-Chambertin

The vines are all Pinot Noir, with an average age of about 40 to 45 years and 11,000 vines per hectare. About 90% of the grapes are destemmed. Fermentation runs about 18 to 20 days in open stainless-steel vats, with pumping over and punching down.

The wine then goes into oak barrels from the Allier forest. For Clos de Bèze the estate uses 100% new oak on average. Ageing lasts 18 months with two rackings, and bottling usually takes place in April. The estate is run today by Eric Rousseau and his daughter Cyrielle.
