The wine is the Grand Vin de Léoville from Château Léoville-Las Cases, a Saint-Julien estate in the Médoc, on the left bank of Bordeaux. The vintage was made under Michel Delon, who directed the estate from 1976 to 2000. It is a red, dry wine from Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot.

The estate behind the 1989

Léoville-Las Cases is classified Deuxième Cru (Second Growth) in the 1855 Bordeaux classification. The 1855 list had a single Second Growth entry, “Léoville”, which today corresponds to three châteaux: Léoville-Las Cases, Léoville-Poyferré and Léoville-Barton. Las Cases took its present form in 1840, when Pierre-Jean de Las Cases and his sister Jeanne divided the property.

The Grand Vin comes mainly from the Clos Léoville Las Cases, the walled plot on the road from Saint-Julien village to Pauillac. The plantings are about 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 21% Merlot and 9% Cabernet Franc, with vines averaging 52 years of age at a density of 8,600 vines per hectare.
