Saint-Julien 1982 on the Robert Parker Wine Advocate vintage chart

A Saint-Julien from a vintage rated 98

The Wine Advocate vintage chart gives 1982 a score of 98 for Saint-Julien, Pauillac and Saint-Estèphe with the code “R”, which means ready to drink. The wine was made while Michel Delon directed the estate, from 1976 to 2000; after his death in 2000 his son Jean-Hubert Delon took over.

Saint-Julien is a Médoc appellation of Bordeaux reserved for still red wine. The blend is Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc.

The Clos Léoville Las Cases on the Pauillac road

The Grand Vin comes mainly from the Clos Léoville Las Cases, a walled plot on the road from Saint-Julien village to Pauillac. The walled vineyard called the Grand Clos covers close to 50 hectares and borders Château Latour in Pauillac. It has Quaternary gravel over gravelly-sand and gravelly-clay subsoils, with clays that sometimes reach the surface.

From the 1840 division to the 1855 Second Growth

Léoville-Las Cases, Léoville-Poyferré and Léoville-Barton all come from the old Léoville estate. Hugh Barton took his share in 1826, and Las Cases was created in 1840, when Pierre-Jean de Las Cases and his sister Jeanne divided the property. Léoville-Las Cases was classified a Second Growth in the 1855 Bordeaux classification and carries the 2eme Grand Cru Classe rank.

Drinking the 1982 between 2003 and 2035

Our suggested drinking window runs from 2003 to 2035, so the wine is already inside it. The window opens 21 years after the harvest and closes 53 years after it. The vintage chart code “R” agrees with that position.

The chart rates the 1982 year for the three northern Médoc appellations, while the window is our range for this bottle.
