First on the 1855 list
Lafite was ranked a First Growth in the 1855 Bordeaux classification. It appears first among the First Growths, under its then name “Château Lafite”. Pauillac has three First Growths today: Lafite, Latour and Mouton Rothschild. Mouton was added only in 1973.
The Rothschild family has owned the estate since 1868. Baron James de Rothschild bought it at public sale on 8 August 1868. Saskia de Rothschild has chaired the group since April 2018.

112 hectares of gravel and sand
The estate covers 267 ha in total, of which 112 ha are under vine. The vines stand in three areas: the slopes around the château, the Carruades plateau to the west, and 4.5 ha in neighbouring Saint-Estèphe. Wine from that Saint-Estèphe plot may be sold as Pauillac by special derogation.
The soils are fine, deep gravel mixed with wind-blown sand, on a subsoil of Tertiary limestone. The oldest plot, La Gravière, was planted in 1886. Vines younger than 10 years are not used in the grand vin.
The usual blend ranges from 80 to 95% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5 to 20% Merlot, and 0 to 5% Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot.

How Lafite is made
Grapes from each plot are fermented in separate vats, in both oak and stainless steel. The grand vin is selected after the first racking in March. The barrels come from the group’s own cooperage in Pauillac, the Tonnellerie des Domaines.
The estate ages the grand vin for 15 to 20 months in 100% new oak. Average production of the grand vin is 16,000 cases a year.
Pauillac in numbers
Pauillac is an appellation for still red wine only. It lies about 50 km north of Bordeaux on the left bank of the Gironde estuary. The vineyard covers about 1,250 ha. Grand Cru Classé wines make up 90% of its output by volume.
The soils are Quaternary gravel terraces, about ten metres thick on average, over Eocene and Oligocene marls and limestones. Pauillac gets about 2,175 hours of sunshine a year.
