Pauillac 1996 on the vintage chart
The Robert Parker Wine Advocate vintage chart gives the Saint-Julien, Pauillac and Saint-Estèphe group a score of 96 for 1996, with the letter T. In the chart’s own words, T means still tannic or youthful. That score describes the vintage across the area, not this bottle.

Château Latour and the 1855 ranking
Château Latour was one of the four estates ranked First Growth in the 1855 Bordeaux Classification, in the 1er Cru Classé group. The estate lies in Pauillac, in the Médoc of Bordeaux. François Pinault acquired control through his holding Artémis in 1993, three years before this harvest. Latour’s second wine, Les Forts de Latour, has been made since 1966.
The grand vin is drawn from l’Enclos, a 47-hectare plot near the château. The estate’s soils are gravels of Günz glacial origin, with at least 40–50% stones, and marly clays. Clay zones drain poorly, so a network of clay-pipe drains was laid in the 19th century. The whole vineyard has been certified organic since October 2018. Grand vin production is normally about 18,000 cases per year, and a third wine, named Pauillac, has been released every year since 1989.
