Latour among the 1855 First Growths

Latour was one of the four châteaux ranked First Growth in 1855, and we file it under 1er Grand Cru Classé. Today the 1855 list has five First Growths, three of them in Pauillac: Lafite Rothschild, Latour and Mouton Rothschild. The ranking belongs to individual châteaux and is separate from the appellation, which dates from 1936. The estate leans on one plot for its grand vin, the 47-hectare l’Enclos beside the château. The estate’s second wine, Les Forts de Latour, has been made since 1966. As of 2022 the estate belongs to François Pinault’s Artémis Domaines.

How the 1998 vintage is rated for Pauillac

The regional rating of the year for Saint-Julien, Pauillac and Saint-Estèphe gives 1998 a score of 87 and the letter T, which stands for “still tannic or youthful”. That describes the vintage across the three communes, not this château, and it is a different scale from a score given to a single wine.

The T letter applies to the vintage as a whole. More estates from the region are in our Bordeaux section.
