Pauillac 2002 on the Robert Parker Wine Advocate vintage chart
Category: Pauillac, 1er Grand Cru Classé, Bordeaux, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, France, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Red, Wine

Four grapes in Château Latour 2002
This is a 0.75 L bottle of Château Latour 2002. It is made from four grape varieties: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot.
Latour was one of the four wines ranked First Growth in 1855, and it is classed as 1er Grand Cru Classe. Pauillac, about 50 km north of Bordeaux, now has three of the five First Growths: Lafite Rothschild, Latour and Mouton Rothschild (promoted in 1973).

What the Pauillac 2002 vintage score says
On the vintage chart, Pauillac 2002 scores 88 with the letter T, meaning the wines are still tannic or youthful. The figure rates the 2002 year across Saint-Julien, Pauillac and Saint-Estèphe, not individual wines. The 88 is a score for the vintage, not for this wine.

L’Enclos, gravel and the grand vin
The grand vin comes from l’Enclos, a 47-hectare plot beside the château. The estate’s soils are gravels of Günz glacial origin with at least 40–50% stones, mixed with marly clays. Because the clay zones drain poorly, a network of clay-pipe drains was laid in the 19th century. Normal grand vin production is about 18,000 cases a year.

Latour owners from 1670 to 1993
From 1670 the estate passed through a line of connected families, later the Ségur family, unbroken until 1963. The British Pearson Group bought three-quarters of the shares in 1963, and Allied Lyons bought Latour in 1989. François Pinault acquired control of the estate through Artémis in 1993.
Drinking window of Latour 2002
Our suggested drinking window is 2015 to 2050, so the wine has been inside it since 2015 and has about a quarter of a century left. With the vintage chart still describing the wines as tannic or youthful, decanting is a reasonable step for a bottle opened now.
