An 1855 First Growth on Pauillac gravel

Lafite was ranked a First Growth in the 1855 classification and is listed first among the First Growths. The Rothschild family has owned it since 1868. The estate farms 112 ha under vine, on gravel and wind-blown sand over Tertiary limestone. Pauillac itself is a red-only appellation on the left bank of the Gironde, about 50 km north of Bordeaux.

Part of the vineyard, 4.5 ha, lies in Saint-Estèphe. Its wine is allowed into the Pauillac appellation by a special derogation.

Authentication marks on Lafite bottles

Lafite bottles carry a different screen-printed motif on the glass for each vintage, a measure against counterfeiting. The 1999 bottle, for example, shows the solar eclipse of 11 August 1999. The “bubble code” seal on the capsule appears only on bottles labelled from February 2012, so a 1998 bottle from the original release will not have it.
