Churchill’s Vintage Port 1985: the second declaration

Churchill’s Vintage Port 1985 was the second Vintage Port the house declared, four years after Churchill Graham was created in 1981. It is a sweet red fortified wine from the Porto appellation, in a 0.75 L bottle. Vintage Port is made from the grapes of a single year and bottled two to three years after the harvest.

Johnny Graham made the wine. He set up Churchill Graham in 1981 with his brothers Anthony and William, and he was 29 at the time. Churchill’s is an independent British Port house, and Johnny Graham still makes its wine.

Old vines and a field blend from Cima Corgo

The wine comes from old vines in the Cima Corgo sub-region of the Douro. It combines fruit from Quinta da Água Alta, Quinta da Manuela and Quinta do Fojo; Quinta da Gricha, Churchill’s own Cima Corgo estate of 50 ha with about 40 ha under vine, was bought only in 1999. The blend is a field blend that includes Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz, Tinta Barroca and Tinto Cão.

The 1985 season

The season began with a very wet winter, with above-average rainfall in November, January and February. A dry, hot summer followed and peaked in July. At Quinta da Água Alta the grapes were fully ripe by the end of the second week of September.
