Dow’s Vintage Port 1962: a year after the Symingtons became sole owners
The 1962 was made one year after the Symington family became sole owners of Dow’s in 1961. The bottle is Dow’s Vintage Port, 0.75 L, a red Porto from the Douro.
Under the rules of the Port institute IVDP, Vintage Port is made from the grapes of a single year and is bottled two to three years after the harvest. Grapes: Tinta Barroca, Tinta Roriz and Touriga Nacional.
Dow’s, Quinta do Bomfim and the Symington family
Dow’s principal vineyards today are Quinta do Bomfim and Quinta da Senhora da Ribeira. Both belong to the Douro, the only region whose grapes qualify for Port.
Quinta do Bomfim has a Dow’s winery and a visitor centre, which opened in 2015. Besides Vintage Port, Dow’s offers Colheita, Aged Tawny, Late Bottled Vintage, Classic and Reserve styles.
The Dow’s name goes back to 1877, when James R. Dow merged his port company with Silva & Cosens. Andrew James Symington became involved in 1912, taking on the management of its Douro vineyards and Gaia lodges. His family has owned the house outright since 1961.
What a 1962 Port is today
A Port from 1962 is more than sixty years old. Port is fortified: grape spirit is added during fermentation, which stops it and leaves residual sugar. IVDP divides the special categories of Port into ruby-style (bottle-matured) and tawny-style (wood-matured) wines, and Vintage Port is one of them. A Single Quinta Vintage Port follows the same definition but comes from a single quinta. For Vintage Port and the other special categories, the legal strength is 19 to 22% vol.
