Coreira, a Port brand shipped by the Douro Wine Shippers and Growers Association

Coreira was a Port brand shipped by the Douro Wine Shippers and Growers Association. That association mostly shipped private-label Port for European clients, often under the buyer’s own brand. The grapes for Coreira’s Vintage Port 1977 were harvested in the Douro, and the wine carries the Porto designation. The bottle holds 0.75 L and carries the 1977 vintage, a year all the major houses declared.

1977, a declared Vintage Port year

All the major Port houses declared 1977 a Vintage Port year. A 1977 Coreira Vintage Port is documented among six known Coreira vintages: 1970, 1977, 1978, 1982, 1985 and 1987.

A Vintage Port now nearly five decades old

According to the Instituto dos Vinhos do Douro e do Porto (IVDP), Vintage Port is made from grapes of a single year and is bottled two to three years after the vintage. A 1977 bottle was therefore filled within a few years of that harvest and has aged in glass for almost fifty years.

Port is fortified with grape spirit during fermentation, which stops the fermentation and leaves at least 17.5 g/L of residual sugar. The spirit measures 77% vol. and must be certified by IVDP before use, and the designation specification sets Port at 19–22% vol., except light dry white Port. Port grapes must be grown in the Demarcated Douro Region, and the winemaking must take place inside it.
