Pauillac AOC covers still red wines only

Château Mouton Rothschild stands in the commune of Pauillac, in the Médoc. The Pauillac appellation (AOC) is reserved for still red wines, so a liqueur cannot carry it.

Mouton Rothschild: second growth in 1855, first growth since 1973

Mouton was ranked a second growth in the 1855 classification. A decree signed by Jacques Chirac on 21 June 1973 promoted it to first growth, the only promotion in that classification. The estate motto since then is “Premier je suis, second je fus, Mouton ne change”. Pauillac holds three First Growths: Lafite, Latour and Mouton.

The estate is owned by the three children of Baroness Philippine de Rothschild, who died in 2014: Camille Sereys de Rothschild, Philippe Sereys de Rothschild and Julien de Beaumarchais de Rothschild. It is run by the family company Baron Philippe de Rothschild SA.

The estate’s grand vin is a red Pauillac based mainly on Cabernet Sauvignon. The estate’s red vineyard is planted with Cabernet Sauvignon (81%), Merlot (15%), Cabernet Franc (3%) and Petit Verdot (1%), and the grand vin is matured in new oak barrels for about twenty months. Since the 1945 vintage the label has as a rule reproduced an original artwork by a contemporary artist, and since 1924 all the wine has been bottled at the château. For the region, see our Bordeaux category.

Questions buyers ask

Is Mouton Rothschild Liqueur de Cassis a wine?

Who owns Château Mouton Rothschild?

The three children of Baroness Philippine de Rothschild: Camille Sereys de Rothschild, Philippe Sereys de Rothschild and Julien de Beaumarchais de Rothschild.

Is Mouton Rothschild a First Growth?
