What the 1970 vintage chart says about Pauillac
The Wine Advocate vintage chart gives the 1970 vintage in Saint-Julien, Pauillac and Saint-Estèphe a score of 87 and the letter I, which stands for an irregular vintage.

Cabernet and Merlot in a 1970 Pauillac
The grape varieties are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot. Pauillac sits on gravel terraces that run parallel to the Gironde estuary, with soils of mainly gravel, sand and clay.

From the 1855 ranking to the 1973 decree
Baron Nathaniel de Rothschild bought Château Brane-Mouton at auction on 11 May 1853 and renamed it Mouton Rothschild. The 1855 classification ranked it as a second growth. In 1924 Baron Philippe de Rothschild, who had taken charge of the estate in 1922, decided that all the wine would be bottled at the château instead of being delivered to Bordeaux merchants in barrel. The decree signed by Jacques Chirac, then Minister of Agriculture, in 1973 is the only promotion ever made to the 1855 Médoc classification, so a 1970 bottle was made under the second-growth ranking.
Mouton’s motto and the label
After 1973 the estate adopted the motto “Premier je suis, second je fus, Mouton ne change” (“First I am, second I was, Mouton does not change”). Mouton is one of Pauillac’s three first growths, with Lafite and Latour. The label of this vintage reproduces an original artwork by a contemporary artist.
