The 1986 vintage, thirteen years after the First Growth promotion

In the 1855 classification Mouton was ranked a second growth. A decree signed by Jacques Chirac on 21 June 1973 promoted it to First Growth, the only promotion the 1855 list has had. The estate’s motto since then reads “Premier je suis, second je fus, Mouton ne change”: first I am, second I was, Mouton does not change.

Gravel terraces behind the 1986 Mouton

Pauillac lies in the Gironde, in the central Médoc, about 50 km north of Bordeaux on the left bank of the estuary. The commune stands on gravel terraces about ten metres thick on average, over marls and limestones. The soils are mainly gravel, sand and clay. Pauillac has three First Growths: Lafite Rothschild, Latour and Mouton Rothschild.

Château bottling since 1924

In 1924 Baron Philippe decided that all the wine, until then delivered to Bordeaux merchants in barrel, would be bottled at the château. Since 1924, all the wine has been bottled at the château.
