Vérité Le Désir 2008: 61% Cabernet Franc from Sonoma County
The 2008 Le Désir is a blend of 61% Cabernet Franc, 31% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Sauvignon and 4% Malbec. Vérité makes three wines, La Muse, La Joie and Le Désir, and Le Désir is the one built on Cabernet Franc. It is not pure Cabernet Franc: Merlot makes up almost a third of this vintage.
The label reads Sonoma County. That is a county appellation, not an AVA, so it does not point to one vineyard district. The grapes come from several parts of the county, and Chalk Hill and Alexander Valley are among the 2008 sites.
How Vérité works: micro-crus and French oak
Vérité was founded in 1998 by Jess Jackson of Jackson Family Wines together with the vigneron Pierre Seillan, who is French. The two met in 1995, and the first vintage was 1998. The winery sits near Healdsburg in Sonoma County.
Each blend is assembled from more than 50 micro-crus. Every one is harvested and fermented separately, and every one is aged in French oak barrels with custom toasts. The micro-crus lie across four appellations: Alexander Valley, Chalk Hill, Bennett Valley and Knights Valley.
The 2008 season and harvest dates
The 2008 season was at times hot, at times cool and at times humid. The harvest for Le Désir ran from 4 to 25 September 2008.

Why a four-AVA blend is labelled Sonoma County
Chalk Hill and Knights Valley, two of the four appellations Vérité sources from, were both established as AVAs on 21 November 1983. The bottle still carries the county name. A county appellation needs no TTB petition and requires only 75 percent of the wine to come from the county, so a blend from several AVAs can use it. Vérité uses Bordeaux varieties, but it is a Sonoma County winery in California, not a Bordeaux château.
