Hillside Select 2005: the Shafer flagship from the hillside blocks on Silverado Trail
Hillside Select is the flagship wine of Shafer Vineyards. It is always 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, made from the hillside blocks around the winery at 6154 Silverado Trail in Napa, in the Stags Leap District. This bottle is the 2005, a dry red in the 0.75 L format. The district is a sub-AVA of Napa Valley in California.

John Shafer, Elias Fernandez and Shinsegae
Commercial winemaking began on the Shafer site in 1880. John Shafer, a Chicago publishing executive, bought the property in 1972 and made the winery’s first Cabernet Sauvignon in 1978. Elias Fernandez became winemaker in 1994 and was still in that role in 2026. In February 2022 Shinsegae Property, part of South Korea’s Shinsegae group, bought the winery.

Stags Leap District inside Napa Valley
Stags Leap District was established as a sub-appellation in 1989. It is one of 17 sub-AVAs inside Napa Valley, an American Viticultural Area created on 28 January 1981 as the second in the United States.
Unlike a French AOC, US federal rules for the Napa Valley AVA set no permitted grapes and no yield limits. A wine labelled Napa Valley must take at least 85% of its volume from grapes grown inside the AVA, and it must be fully finished in California. Cabernet Sauvignon is the most planted variety in the valley, at 54% of plantings.

Drinking window 2015 to 2040
Our suggested drinking window for this vintage is 2015 to 2040. In 2026 the wine sits inside that window, 21 years after the harvest, so ask about storage history and fill level before buying.
