Abreu Madrona Ranch Cabernet Sauvignon 2002 from Napa Valley
The 2002 Madrona Ranch comes from the vineyard that gave Abreu its first commercial wine: the 1987 Madrona Ranch, after an unreleased 1986. The bottle is 0.75 L of dry red Cabernet Sauvignon from Napa Valley. It is a single-vineyard wine from St. Helena. Abreu labels carry illustrations by the engraver Robert (Bob) Swartley and are printed on presses more than 150 years old.
Madrona Ranch, the vineyard behind the 2002
Madrona Ranch lies on the valley floor west of St. Helena, near the foot of the Mayacamas Mountains, on an alluvial fan. The Meyer family owned it. Sally Meyer asked David Abreu to look at the diseased vineyard and put up the capital, and he replanted it in 1980. The soils range from red Aiken to white tufa to dark clay and rocks.
David Abreu leased the ranch until 2021, when he bought it from the Meyer family. In 2002 the vineyard was therefore leased, not owned. It is planted to Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot, with Petit Verdot added in 2000.
How the Abreu Cabernet is made
Grapes are picked by ripeness regardless of variety and co-fermented, and each vineyard’s lots are fermented separately. The lots age separately in barrel for a year before blending trials begin. The core blend draws on two to three fermentations and ages together for a further year before bottling.
Brad Grimes, who began working with David Abreu in 2000, later became the winemaker.
Abreu as a whole makes about 1,000 cases in a typical vintage.
What ‘Napa Valley’ on the 2002 label guarantees
Napa Valley became an American Viticultural Area on 28 January 1981, the second AVA in the United States. A wine labelled Napa Valley must take at least 85% of its volume from grapes grown inside the boundaries. According to the Napa Valley Vintners, Cabernet Sauvignon covers 54% of plantings, the largest share of any variety. The federal AVA text sets no list of permitted grapes or yield limits.
