Pahlmeyer Proprietary Red 1997: a 73% Cabernet Sauvignon blend
The 1997 Pahlmeyer Proprietary Red is a blend of five Bordeaux varieties: 73% Cabernet Sauvignon, 17% Merlot, 7% Petit Verdot, 2% Cabernet Franc and 1% Malbec. Its alcohol is 14.7% by volume. The estate released it on 1 October 2000.

Where the 1997 grapes came from
The 1997 grapes came from seven vineyards: Napanook, Thorevilos, Madrona Ranch, Rancho Chimiles, Caldwell Vineyard, York Creek and Hossfeld Vineyard. Caldwell Vineyard, in Coombsville, is the property where Pahlmeyer planted its first vines in 1981, using Bordeaux cuttings. The wine carries the Napa Valley appellation, which requires at least 85% of the grapes to be grown inside the AVA. The AVA was established on 28 January 1981, the second in the United States after Augusta in Missouri.

Helen Turley in 1997, Randy Dunn in 1986
Helen Turley was the winemaker for the 1997 vintage. The first Pahlmeyer Proprietary Red was made in 1986, with Randy Dunn as winemaker. Since 2019 the winemaker has been Katie Vogt.

Jayson Pahlmeyer and the 2019 Gallo purchase
Jayson Pahlmeyer, a former trial lawyer, founded the winery. E. & J. Gallo Winery announced its purchase on 19 November 2019, so the brand is no longer family-owned. The purchase included the Pahlmeyer and Jayson by Pahlmeyer brands. The Wayfarer brand and Wayfarer Vineyard were not part of the sale and remain run by Cleo Pahlmeyer, Jayson Pahlmeyer’s daughter.
