Niepoort Vintage Port 1977: made before the family owned a quinta
Ten years before the house owned a single vineyard, Niepoort made the 1977 Vintage Port from bought-in grapes. It is a red Porto in the standard 0.75 L bottle. Niepoort bought its first estate, Quinta de Nápoles, only in 1987, and the neighbouring Quinta do Carril in 1988.

What Vintage Port means for a 1977
Vintage Port is made from the grapes of a single year and, under current rules of the Instituto dos Vinhos do Douro e do Porto (IVDP), is bottled two to three years after the harvest. Port is fortified: grape spirit is added during fermentation, which stops it and leaves residual sugar, at least 17.5 g/L under the appellation rules. It is a sweet red Port.

Tinta Barroca, Tinta Roriz and Touriga Nacional in the 1977
The blend is Tinta Barroca, Tinta Roriz and Touriga Nacional. All three are among the five principal red grapes named for Port. Port may come only from the Demarcated Douro Region, and the winemaking must also take place inside it.

Niepoort today: 62 ha of its own vines
Niepoort is a family-owned Port and Douro house in Vila Nova de Gaia, dated to 1842. Dirk Niepoort represents the fifth generation. Today the house owns 62 hectares of organic vineyards in the Douro, split between Quinta de Nápoles and Quinta do Carril in the Cima Corgo, on the left bank of the Tedo river. Many of the Quinta de Nápoles vineyards face north at 80 to 250 metres. Besides Vintage, Colheita and Tawny Port, the house makes dry Douro table wines such as Redoma, Batuta, Charme and Vertente.
