ROBERT PARKER " Tasted blind at the annual "Burgfest" tasting in Beaune. The 2012 La Grande Rue Grand Cru from Lamarche has a fabulous bouquet that gently unfurls in the glass: fine mineralité and tension, wonderful precision here. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tensile tannin, crisp and poised, tightly wound and certainly needing several years to really show its mettle, but a great wine that is both understated yet intense. I'll be cautious now, but I would not be surprised to see this gain more favourable reviews in the future. "

Domaine François Lamarche La Grande Rue Grand Cru Monopole 2012

A wine of legendary provenance from one of Burgundy’s most extraordinary vineyard sites, La Grande Rue occupies perhaps the most privileged terroir in all of winedom—a narrow monopole Grand Cru positioned directly between Romanée-Conti and La Tâche. Domaine François Lamarche, sole proprietor of this 1.65-hectare treasure, has guarded this monopole since 1933, producing wines that capture the magical essence of Vosne-Romanée’s greatest slope. The 2012 vintage, now beautifully mature at 12+ years, offers collectors a rare opportunity to experience wine from this hallowed ground at a fraction of what neighboring DRC parcels command.

The Estate

Domaine François Lamarche holds a unique position in Burgundy’s hierarchy as the guardian of La Grande Rue, the Grand Cru monopole that stands as their crown jewel. The Lamarche family acquired this extraordinary vineyard in 1933, recognizing even then that this narrow band of vines occupying the slope between Burgundy’s two most legendary climats represented something special.

For decades, La Grande Rue existed in relative obscurity, classified only as Premier Cru despite terroir quality that clearly merited higher recognition. In 1992, after persistent efforts by the Lamarche family, the INAO officially elevated La Grande Rue to Grand Cru status—recognizing what the family and discerning collectors had known all along: this monopole produces wine worthy of its illustrious neighbors.

The estate’s winemaking philosophy emphasizes traditional Burgundian methods: sustainable viticulture with increasing organic practices, whole-cluster fermentation, extended aging in French oak (typically 18-24 months with 30-40% new wood), and minimal filtration. The goal is to allow La Grande Rue’s extraordinary terroir to express itself with clarity and precision. Under current management, quality has reached new heights, with recent vintages earning critical acclaim and commanding prices that reflect the monopole’s true stature.

La Grande Rue: The Sacred Monopole Between Giants

La Grande Rue occupies what many consider the most remarkable position in all of Burgundy: a 1.65-hectare monopole forming a narrow corridor between Romanée-Conti to the east and La Tâche to the west, with La Romanée above and Romanée-Saint-Vivant below. This location on the sacred ‘Vosne-Romanée slope’—where limestone bedrock, perfect drainage, ideal exposure, and mysterious terroir magic converge—has produced legendary wines for centuries.

The vineyard’s name (‘the great street’) references its elongated shape, running north-south along the slope like a road connecting the greatest climats. The terroir features classic Côte de Nuits geology: thin topsoil over limestone bedrock with significant iron-rich clay, providing excellent drainage while retaining moisture during dry periods. Southeast exposure captures optimal sunlight throughout the growing season, while the mid-slope position offers perfect mesoclimate conditions.

What sets La Grande Rue apart—beyond its proximity to Burgundy’s most legendary vineyards—is its unique synthesis of characteristics: it combines Romanée-Conti’s power and structure, La Tâche’s opulence and depth, and Romanée-Saint-Vivant’s elegance and aromatic complexity. The result is Grand Cru Pinot Noir of extraordinary completeness—wines that possess everything collectors seek in great Burgundy.

Domaine Lamarche’s vines, averaging 50+ years of age, benefit from decades of careful stewardship. Low yields (often 30-35 hl/ha), hand-harvesting at optimal maturity, and meticulous sorting ensure that only fruit worthy of this hallowed terroir makes it to bottle. The monopole status means every bottle of La Grande Rue comes from these 1.65 hectares of sacred ground—an authenticity guarantee that few wines can claim.

The 2012 Vintage

The 2012 vintage in Burgundy challenged producers with an uneven growing season marked by spring frost, summer hail in some areas, and variable flowering conditions. These difficulties naturally reduced yields across the Côte d’Or, concentrating the remaining fruit. However, a spectacular late summer and autumn brought ideal ripening conditions—warm days, cool nights, and perfect harvest weather—allowing Pinot Noir to achieve excellent phenolic maturity while maintaining vibrant acidity.

While critics initially approached 2012 with caution, time has revealed the vintage’s classical quality. The wines possess refined structure, bright fruit expression, and the balance necessary for graceful aging. They lack the sheer power of warmer vintages (2009, 2015) but offer superior elegance, terroir transparency, and aging potential—qualities particularly valuable in Grand Cru wines designed for extended cellaring.

Now at 12+ years of age, the finest 2012 Grand Cru Burgundies have entered their optimal drinking window. Primary fruit has evolved into complex secondary and tertiary aromatics while retaining core vibrancy. The vintage’s natural acidity and refined tannins have ensured harmonious development. For La Grande Rue, 2012 represents an ideal vintage to experience this terroir’s magic at peak maturity.

Tasting Experience

  • At 12 years of age, the wine opens with captivating aromatic complexity that immediately signals Grand Cru pedigree: layers of red and black fruits (cherry, raspberry, cassis) intertwine with rose petals, violet, and exotic spice. Beneath the opulent fruit lie earthy undertones—forest floor, truffle, mushroom—alongside subtle oak influence (vanilla, toast) now fully integrated. Mineral notes of iron and crushed stone anchor the bouquet, reflecting the limestone terroir.
  • The palate reveals La Grande Rue’s unique synthesis of power and elegance: medium-to-full-bodied with remarkable concentration yet maintaining the silky texture characteristic of great Vosne-Romanée. Red fruit flavors dominate the attack (cherry, raspberry, pomegranate), supported by vibrant acidity that provides lift and energy. The tannins, now beautifully resolved, offer structure without astringency.
  • Mid-palate depth showcases the Grand Cru’s nobility: layer upon layer of flavor and texture unfold—red and black fruits, savory notes (cured meat, black tea, dried herbs), subtle spice (cinnamon, clove), and persistent minerality. The wine demonstrates remarkable balance—each element in perfect proportion, nothing out of place. This is Pinot Noir of extraordinary completeness.
  • The finish extends with aristocratic grace, leaving lingering impressions of cherry pit, rose petal, iron, and fine spice. The wine has reached a beautiful stage of maturity where youthful exuberance has given way to developed complexity while retaining freshness and vitality. The structure suggests continued evolution for another decade, but the wine offers profound pleasure now.
  • This is Grand Cru Burgundy from hallowed ground—wine that captures the essence of Vosne-Romanée’s legendary slope. While it may not command DRC pricing, La Grande Rue delivers comparable quality and provenance: a monopole positioned between Burgundy’s most famous vineyards, producing wine that synthesizes the best characteristics of its illustrious neighbors. For collectors seeking Grand Cru magic at accessible pricing, this bottle represents extraordinary value.

Service & Food Pairing

Serve at 16-18°C in large Burgundy stems to showcase the wine’s complex aromatics and refined texture. Decant 45-60 minutes before service to integrate the wine’s components and awaken its Grand Cru bouquet. Pour gently to avoid disturbing sediment. Allow 15-20 minutes in the glass before the first sip—the wine continues to open over 3-4 hours, revealing new dimensions throughout the evening. Grand Cru of this caliber deserves contemplation.

Exceptional pairings:

  • Roasted game: venison loin with cherry reduction, wild duck with black truffle sauce
  • Aged beef preparations: côte de boeuf with bone marrow and wild mushrooms
  • Truffle dishes: risotto with Périgord truffle, truffle-stuffed chicken breast
  • Wild mushroom tart with aged Comté and caramelized shallots
  • Époisses or mature Comté cheese (24-36 months) with walnut bread

Cellaring & Evolution

At 12+ years from vintage, this wine has entered its optimal drinking window and will continue offering pleasure for another 8-12 years under proper storage conditions. The 2012 vintage’s excellent acidity and refined structure, combined with La Grande Rue’s Grand Cru terroir and monopole quality, ensure graceful evolution.

Those opening bottles now will experience the wine at beautiful maturity—tertiary complexity fully developed while retaining vibrant fruit and fresh acidity. Patient collectors may continue cellaring until 2030-2035, allowing further development of savory tertiary characteristics (sous-bois, leather, game) while the wine’s structure remains intact.

Grand Cru Burgundy from legendary sites like La Grande Rue can age for 20-30+ years in great vintages. While 2012 isn’t the longest-lived vintage, the wine’s balance ensures continued evolution. Store horizontally in a dark, vibration-free environment at 12-14°C with 70-75% humidity.

Collector’s Note: La Grande Rue represents one of Burgundy’s most compelling value propositions for serious collectors: a monopole Grand Cru positioned between Romanée-Conti and La Tâche, delivering comparable quality at a fraction of the price. While DRC’s adjacent parcels command tens of thousands of euros per bottle, La Grande Rue offers access to essentially the same terroir—the same slope, the same limestone bedrock, the same magical microclimate—at prices that remain (relatively) accessible. This 2012, now drinking at peak maturity, provides immediate gratification for those seeking mature Grand Cru Burgundy from one of the world’s most privileged vineyard sites. For collectors building serious Burgundy cellars, La Grande Rue deserves a place alongside more famous names.
