Mazis-Chambertin, west of the Route des Grands Crus

Mazis-Chambertin lies west of the Route des Grands Crus. Chambertin-Clos de Bèze borders it to the south and Ruchottes-Chambertin to the west. The appellation had 8.79 hectares in production in 2008, and the rules set a minimum density of 9,000 vines per hectare. The soils are described as poor, which gives small berries and low yields.

The appellation was officially recognised in 1937. It is one of nine grand cru appellations of Gevrey-Chambertin, in the Côte de Nuits.

Philippe Harmand’s 9 hectares of Gevrey Pinot Noir

The domaine is a family estate in Gevrey-Chambertin, run by Philippe Harmand, the fifth generation, who has handled vinification since 2007. It farms about 9 hectares, all in Gevrey-Chambertin and all Pinot Noir, with vines averaging about 50 years old. The estate works under reasoned viticulture (lutte raisonnée) and is not certified organic.

In the cellar the grapes are fully destemmed. The domaine’s usual method is a five-day cold maceration, a spontaneous fermentation of 15 to 21 days in temperature-controlled stainless steel, and 12 to 16 months in oak, with bottling without filtration. These are the domaine’s general methods, not notes on the 2015 itself.
