Chambertin among the Côte de Nuits grand crus

The Côte de Nuits contains 24 grand cru appellations, spread over six communes, and nine of them belong to Gevrey-Chambertin: Chambertin, Chambertin-Clos de Bèze, Chapelle-Chambertin, Charmes-Chambertin, Griotte-Chambertin, Latricières-Chambertin, Mazis-Chambertin, Mazoyères-Chambertin and Ruchottes-Chambertin.

Gevrey took Chambertin into its own name by a royal ordinance of Louis-Philippe in 1847.

Across the Côte de Nuits, vineyard soils are thin, generally calcareous and well drained. The vineyards run as a strip about 20 km long that narrows in places to about 200 m.
