A single 7.53 ha walled vineyard in Morey-Saint-Denis

Clos de Tart is one of five Grand Cru appellations in Morey-Saint-Denis. It is a monopole: one parcel of 7.53 ha enclosed by a dry-stone wall of 1.2 km, with a single owner at a time. It is the largest Grand Cru monopole in Burgundy.

The plot lies mid-slope at 269 to 302 m with a south-easterly aspect, on clay-limestone soil. Today the average vine age is about 60 years, some vines are over 100 years old, and the vineyard is split into twelve subplots harvested separately. Biodynamic practices began in 2016 and Biodyvin certification followed in 2019, so neither applies to the 2011.

Clos de Tart from 1141 to the Pinault sale

Cistercian nuns of Tart Abbey, a dependency of Cîteaux, founded the vineyard in 1141. In 1855 it was ranked Tête de Cuvée in the Côte-d’Or classification, the only Morey-Saint-Denis estate to receive that rank. Henri Mommessin bought the property at auction in 1932, and the Clos de Tart AOC was granted in 1939. The 2011 was made under Mommessin ownership. Artémis Domaines, the holding of the Pinault family, agreed to buy the estate in October 2017, with the sale closing in early 2018.
