Clos de Tart Grand Cru Monopole 2001 from a single 7.53 ha vineyard

The 2001 Clos de Tart is a red wine from Morey-Saint-Denis, in Burgundy‘s Côte de Nuits. It is a Grand Cru and a monopole: one vineyard of 7.53 ha, never divided, with one owner at a time. The bottle offered here is 0.75 L.

The wine is made from Pinot Noir alone. Appellation rules allow up to 15% Chardonnay, Pinot Blanc and Pinot Gris, but in practice Pinot Noir is the only variety used.

The Clos de Tart vineyard today

The plot measures about 300 m by 250 m and is enclosed by a dry-stone wall of 1.2 km, restored in 2006. It lies mid-slope at 269 to 302 m, facing south-east, on clay-limestone soil with more limestone below and more marl above.

Today the vines average about 60 years, and some are over 100. The estate now harvests twelve subplots separately. Biodynamic practices began in 2016, so they do not apply to the 2001.

Ownership of Clos de Tart in 2001

Henri Mommessin bought the property at auction in 1932. The Mommessin family later sold it to Artémis Domaines, the Pinault family holding, in 2017–2018. The 2001 falls between the two dates, and the estate has always been held by one owner at a time.
