Jacques-Marie Duvault-Blochet already owned vines here when he bought Romanée-Conti in 1869. From 2009 to 2019 the estate bottled between 9,586 bottles (2013) and 15,308 bottles (2014) of Grands-Échezeaux per vintage. No Grands-Échezeaux was bottled in 2016.

How Domaine de la Romanée-Conti farms its grands crus

Apart from one Vosne-Romanée premier cru, all the estate’s wines come from grand cru vineyards. The vines have been farmed organically since 1985. In 2002 biodynamics was still on trial: the estate trialled it from 1990 to 2006, adopted it across the estate afterwards and obtained Biodyvin certification in 2016.

The estate owns the whole of two grand crus: Romanée-Conti (1.81 ha) and La Tâche (6.06 ha). Grands-Échezeaux is not among its monopoles. In 2020 part of the estate was ploughed with horses.

The estate replants with its own selection of Pinot Noir, propagated from the old vines of Romanée-Conti.

Grands-Échezeaux and Flagey-Échezeaux in the Côte de Nuits

Pinot Noir is the main grape of this strip of vineyard, about 20 km long. It lies between Dijon and Corgoloin in Burgundy, and the area holds 24 grand cru appellations. Grands-Échezeaux is one of the two in Flagey-Échezeaux. The Côte de Nuits has thin, calcareous, well-drained soils on a limestone escarpment.
