Corton Grand Cru 2009: the Domaine’s first vintage from Corton

Robert Parker Wine Advocate rates the 2009 at 95/100. It was the first vintage the estate made from its Corton vines, which it took over on 11 November 2008. It was also the largest of 2009–2019: 8,480 bottles, against 2,907 in 2012.

Leased vines, three climats, one wine

The estate does not own its Corton. It farms 2.27 ha under a fermage (rental) agreement with the Prince Florent de Mérode family. The holding is made up of three climats: Clos du Roi (0.57 ha), Bressandes (1.19 ha) and Renardes (about 0.50 ha).

The three climats, all Pinot Noir, go into one Grand Cru wine labelled Corton. It is not a single-vineyard Bressandes or Clos du Roi. Young Bressandes vines planted in 2017 are harvested separately and kept out of the Corton. The Corton appellation was first recognised by the decree of 31 July 1937, and under its rules Pinot Noir is the principal grape for the red wines.

Organic since 1985, Biodyvin since 2016

The Domaine de la Romanée-Conti has farmed its vineyards organically since 1985. It trialled biodynamic methods from 1990 to 2006, adopted them across the estate afterwards and obtained Biodyvin certification in 2016. Its other leased grand cru in the Corton hill, 2.91 ha of Corton-Charlemagne, has been sharecropped since 11 November 2018. Whole clusters never fall below 60% of the estate’s red fermentations.
