A cuvée named after the man who bought Romanée-Conti in 1869

The wine is named after Jacques-Marie Duvault-Blochet (1789–1874), who bought the Romanée-Conti vineyard in 1869. In the 1930s, in great vintages, the estate sold wines from young vines under his name. It revived the cuvée with the 1999 vintage.

The 1999 came from a second picking in all of the estate’s vineyards except Romanée-Conti, so the cuvée is not a second wine of Romanée-Conti. The estate does not make the Duvault-Blochet every year.

Grand-cru young vines, sold as premier cru

The wine is a blend of young vines from the estate’s grand cru holdings. Six of the Côte de Nuits’ 24 grand cru appellations lie in Vosne-Romanée. The Vosne-Romanée rules let wine from the delimited areas of those grands crus, and from Échezeaux and Grands-Échezeaux, be labelled Vosne-Romanée premier cru without a climat name. That is how this cuvée is labelled.

The estate is based in Vosne-Romanée, in the Côte-d’Or. The Gaudin de Villaine family owns one half of the société civile, set up on 31 July 1942, and the descendants of Henri Leroy own the other half. Apart from this cuvée, all of its wines come from grand cru vineyards. More bottles from the region are listed under Burgundy.
