ROBERT PARKER " The 2009 Vosne-Romanee Cuvee Duvault-Blochet is a supple, racy wine. Layers of dark fruit blossom on the palate as this gorgeous, textured wine opens up in the glass. Sweet, silky tannins frame the exquisite finish. The Cuvee Duvault-Blochet is made from a second selection of fruit across all of the Domaine's vineyards in Vosne. In its finest vintages it is a terrific wine that delivers plenty of the winery's signature style at a slightly more accessible price. A recent bottle of the 2006 was striking. Anticipated maturity: 2019-2039.
The historic Domaine de la Romanee-Conti has recently moved offices to a renovated complex in the center of Vosne. Aubert de Villaine compares the 2009s to the 1959s. I will have to take his word for it, as I wasn't even close to being born when those wines were made. De Villaine thinks the 2009s will remain open throughout their lives. Unfortunately I wasn't able to taste the Grands-Echezeaux, Richebourg and Romanee-St. Vivant, as the wines were bottled in the days leading up to my visit. I will report on those wines from bottle later this year. The harvest started on September 10 with Corton and ended on September 19 with the last of the Echezeaux. The 2009s were vinified with 100% whole clusters and aged in 100% new oak barrels. "

Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Cuvée Duvault-Blochet Vosne-Romanée Premier Cru 2009
The Estate
Domaine de la Romanée-Conti requires no introduction to serious wine collectors—it is, quite simply, the most prestigious wine estate on Earth. Co-owned by the de Villaine and Leroy families since the 18th century, DRC produces wines from the greatest Grand Cru parcels in Burgundy, farmed with biodynamic practices and vinified with methods perfected over generations.
The domaine’s holdings read like a greatest hits of Burgundian viticulture: monopoles Romanée-Conti and La Tâche, plus parcels in Richebourg, Romanée-Saint-Vivant, Échezeaux, Grands-Échezeaux, and Corton. From these hallowed vineyards, DRC produces wines of extraordinary depth, complexity, and longevity—bottles that command prices rivaling fine art and appear at auction with the frequency and fanfare of masterpieces.
DRC’s winemaking philosophy emphasizes minimal intervention: biodynamic viticulture with microscopic yields (often 20-25 hl/ha), whole-cluster fermentation, aging in 100% new French oak, and bottling without filtration. The goal is to allow each terroir to express itself with perfect clarity while providing the structure for decades of aging. The results speak for themselves: wines that collectors treasure as liquid history.
Cuvée Duvault-Blochet: DRC’s Village-Level Tribute
Cuvée Duvault-Blochet honors Jacques-Marie Duvault-Blochet, who assembled DRC’s legendary vineyard holdings in the 19th century. This cuvée blends fruit from several DRC-owned Vosne-Romanée Premier Cru parcels, creating a wine that offers insight into DRC’s winemaking style at a fraction of the cost of their Grand Cru bottlings.
The fruit comes from Premier Cru vineyards surrounding DRC’s Grand Cru holdings, benefiting from similar terroir—limestone-based soils with excellent drainage and ideal mid-slope exposure. While lacking the concentration and complexity of Grand Cru fruit, these parcels produce classic Vosne-Romanée Pinot Noir: elegant, aromatic, and refined.
For collectors, Duvault-Blochet represents an accessible entry point into DRC’s universe—still expensive by Burgundy standards but offering the domaine’s signature biodynamic farming, whole-cluster fermentation, and aging in 100% new oak. The wines showcase DRC’s house style while expressing village-level terroir.
