Pommard 2001 on the Robert Parker Wine Advocate vintage chart

Domaine Lejeune Pommard Les Poutures Premier Cru 2001 in a half bottle

This bottle holds 0.375 L, half the usual volume, so it suits a single dinner for two. It is the 2001 Les Poutures from Domaine Lejeune, a red Pommard made from Pinot Noir and ranked Premier Cru. Les Poutures is a Premier Cru climat of the Pommard appellation, and the wine is dry.

Les Poutures in the Lejeune vineyards

The estate farms 8.70 hectares across nine appellations, mainly in Pommard. Of these, 1.1 hectares lie in Les Poutures. Its other two Premier Cru parcels are Les Argillières and Les Rugiens. Today only sulfur and copper are used in the vineyard, and parts of it are ploughed with horses. The domaine has been certified organic since 2021, two decades after this vintage.

Semi-carbonic, foot-trodden Pinot at Lejeune

The domaine ferments by semi-carbonic maceration in an open wooden vat. Between 20% and 40% of the whole grapes are crushed by foot, and the wine stays in contact with the skins for three to four weeks. New oak in barrel ageing is limited to 20%, and the wines are bottled without fining or filtration and with only light sulphur.

Burgundy 2001: drinking now

The Wine Advocate vintage chart rates Côte de Beaune reds from 2001 at 88 and describes them as ready to drink. That is a rating of the year across the region, not a score for this bottle.

A former confrérie house on Pommard’s church square

Domaine Lejeune sits on the church square of Pommard. The buildings once belonged to a religious brotherhood, the Confrérie du Saint Sacrement, and were sold as church property after the Revolution. The estate has been linked to the Jullien de Pommerol family since 1783, and François Jullien de Pommerol had worked at the domaine since 1977, which covers the 2001 harvest. It is one of the Burgundy estates in our range.
