Pommard Cuvée Raymond Cyrot 2014: six plots, 1.66 hectares
The Pommard Cuvée Raymond Cyrot 2014 comes from six plots that add up to about 1.66 hectares: Les Riottes (0.70 ha), Les Charmots (0.30 ha), Les Bertins (0.25 ha), Les Vaumuriens bas (0.18 ha), La Vache (0.14 ha) and Les Rugiens bas (0.09 ha). It is a dry red from Pinot Noir, bottled at village level under the Appellation Pommard Contrôlée. Three of the plots, Les Charmots, Les Bertins and Les Rugiens bas, are Premier Cru climats, but the wine itself carries the village appellation.

The Cyrot-Chaudron gift of 1979
The cuvée is named after Mr and Mrs Cyrot-Chaudron, who gave their vineyards to the Hospices de Beaune in 1979. The gift included several parcels of old vines. Most Hospices cuvées carry the names of benefactors or founders in this way.

From the Hospices cellar to a merchant’s label
The Domaine des Hospices de Beaune vinifies the wine. It is then sold at the charity auction held on the third Sunday of November, and the buyer engages a négociant-éleveur to mature and bottle it. The label therefore shows both the Hospices name and the name of the merchant who finished the wine, and the bottler can differ from one buyer to the next.

The 2014 vintage in Pommard
June hail in 2014 cut crops in Beaune, Pommard, Volnay and Meursault by half or more. The same Cyrot-Chaudron donation produced a new white Premier Cru at the 2014 auction, Cuvée Suzanne et Raymond, from a plot replanted with Chardonnay in 2010. The Robert Parker Wine Advocate vintage chart rates Côte de Beaune reds 2014 at 91 and describes the year as early maturing and accessible. That is a rating of the region and the year, not of this bottle.

Our suggested drinking window for this 0.75 L bottle is 2018–2030, so the wine is in its window now. Serve at 15–17 °C. Pinot Noir from Pommard suits roast poultry, duck and mushroom dishes.
