Pichon Baron 2015, one of Pauillac’s two Second Growths

Pichon Baron 2015 is the grand vin of one of Pauillac‘s only two Second Growths in the 1855 Bordeaux classification, the estate AXA Millésimes bought in 1987. It comes in a 0.75 L bottle.

Baron, not Comtesse: reading the 2015 label

The original Pichon property was divided in 1850 into two estates, Baron and Comtesse. They have different owners today and are separate properties. The bottle here is the Baron, identified by the “au Baron de Pichon-Longueville” label.

Pichon Baron’s gravel by the Gironde

The vineyard covers 70 to 73 hectares. The soil is deep, well-drained gravel close to the Gironde estuary. The vines are planted at 9,000 per hectare.

The vineyard is planted to Cabernet Sauvignon 60%, Merlot 35%, Cabernet Franc 4% and Petit Verdot 1%.

From Raoul de Pichon-Longueville to AXA

The château of Pichon Baron was built in 1851 by Raoul de Pichon-Longueville, a year after the family property was divided. In 1987 AXA bought the estate, with Jean-Michel Cazes as administrator, and Christian Seely has been its managing director since 2001.

The estate’s second labels are Les Tourelles de Longueville and Les Griffons de Pichon Baron. The estate ages its grand vin for 18 months, with 70% of the barrels new.
