Mouton Rothschild: second growth in 1855, first growth in 1973

Mouton was ranked a second growth in the 1855 Médoc classification. On 21 June 1973 a decree signed by Jacques Chirac, then Minister of Agriculture, promoted it to first growth, since then one of Pauillac’s three First Growths with Lafite and Latour. The estate motto since then reads “Premier je suis, second je fus, Mouton ne change” (“First I am, second I was, Mouton does not change”).

1993: the year of the second wine

Baroness Philippine de Rothschild inherited the estate in 1988 after the death of her father, Baron Philippe. She created a second wine in 1993. It was labelled “Le Second Vin de Mouton Rothschild” for that vintage and took the name Le Petit Mouton de Mouton Rothschild from 1994.

Mouton 1993 today: a C year for Pauillac and its neighbours

The Robert Parker vintage chart rates 1993 for St-Julien, Pauillac and St-Estèphe together at 78 (C). The chart score covers that area, not this wine, and is a separate scale from the 90 given to this wine.

The Mouton vineyard and cellar

The vines stand on deep gravelly soil, planted at 10,000 vines per hectare. The estate matures its grand vin in new oak barrels for about twenty months.
