Premier Grand Cru Classé in Pessac-Léognan

Haut-Brion lies in Pessac, a few miles southwest of the centre of Bordeaux, in the Pessac-Léognan appellation of Bordeaux. It was ranked a Premier Grand Cru Classé in the 1855 Classification, and it was the only red from outside the Médoc on that list. Today it is also classified for its red wine in the Classification of Graves of 1953, revised in 1959.

The vineyard covers 51 ha, of which 48 ha carry red varieties. The topsoil is gravel made of small quartz pebbles, lying on clay, sand and limestone. The red varieties planted are Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. The estate has belonged to the Dillon family’s Domaine Clarence Dillon since 1935, when the American banker Clarence Dillon bought it.
