Pessac-Léognan 1989 on the Robert Parker Wine Advocate vintage chart
Category: Pessac-Léognan, 1er Cru Classé, Bordeaux, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, France, Merlot, Red, Wine

Château Haut-Brion 1989: a First Growth at 37 years old
Château Haut-Brion 1989 is a dry red from Pessac-Léognan, in a 0.75 L bottle. The Robert Parker Wine Advocate vintage chart rates Pessac-Léognan 1989 at 89. Our suggested drinking window is 2009 to 2059, so the wine is inside it now.
The estate ranks as a 1er Cru Classé. In 1855 it was ranked a Premier Grand Cru Classé, the only red-wine estate from outside the Médoc in that classification. It is also one of the 14 Crus Classés de Graves (classified for its red), all of which lie inside Pessac-Léognan.

A harvest from 31 August and 90% new oak
1989 was a historically early year, warm, sunny and dry throughout the growing season. The red was picked from 31 August to 20 September.
The blend is 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 41% Merlot and 9% Cabernet Franc. It was aged in 90% new barrels. Alcohol is 13%. Bottling ran from 8 to 25 July 1991.

Quartz gravel more than 3 m deep in places
The vineyard covers 51 ha around Pessac, a few miles southwest of the centre of Bordeaux. The gravel layer is from 20 cm to more than 3 m thick. It is made of small quartz pebbles and rests on clay, sand, limestone and shelly sand.

Owners and appellation
The American banker Clarence Dillon bought the estate on 13 May 1935; his family’s company, Domaine Clarence Dillon, still owns it. The Pessac-Léognan appellation only came into effect on 9 September 1987, two years before this vintage. In 1855 the estate was counted as Graves.
