The first harvest in the new vat room

The 2012 harvest ran from 1 to 15 October and was the first received in the estate’s new vat room, which came into service that year. The estate matures the grand vin in new oak barrels for about twenty months. The vineyard lies mostly on a hillock called the Plateau de Mouton, which rises to 27 m above sea level, on deep gravelly soil.

The 2012 blend is 90% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Merlot and 2% Cabernet Franc.

From 20 July to 20 September 2012 conditions were dry. Rainfall to the end of September was 26% below the average since 1962: 435 mm against 589 mm.

Miquel Barceló’s label

The label of this vintage was illustrated by the artist Miquel Barceló, born in 1957. Since the 1945 vintage the estate has, as a rule, put an original artwork by a contemporary artist on each label.

Mouton’s move from second to first growth

Mouton was ranked a second growth in 1855. A decree of 21 June 1973 promoted it to first growth, the only promotion made to the 1855 Médoc classification. The estate motto since then is “Premier je suis, second je fus, Mouton ne change”.
