Unico spends at least 10 years between wood and bottle: about 6 years in wood and 4 in bottle. The wood is 225-litre French and American oak barrels and large wooden vats of 20,000 to 22,000 litres.

Vineyards behind the wine

Vega Sicilia farms about 210 ha of vines on an estate of around 1,000 ha, at 700 to 900 m altitude. The soils are fine colluvial deposits with limestone fragments, quartz gravel and angular limestone boulders at the surface. Planting density is 2,222 vines per hectare. The first Unico was made in 1915, 67 years before the current ownership began, and the Álvarez family has owned the estate since 1982, the year the Ribera del Duero DO was created.
