Recent releases of Reserva Especial are 94 to 96% Tinto Fino, the local name of Tempranillo, with 4 to 6% Cabernet Sauvignon. In Unico, Cabernet Sauvignon accounts for 3 to 8% of the blend, depending on the vintage.
Vega Sicilia, Valbuena de Duero: where Unico is grown
Eloy Lecanda y Chaves founded Vega Sicilia in 1864, and the first Unico vintage was made in 1915. The Álvarez family bought the estate in 1982, the year Ribera del Duero received its DO status. Of about 1,000 ha, 210 ha are planted with vines, at 700 to 900 m altitude. The soils are fine colluvial deposits with limestone fragments and quartz gravel. The family also founded the Alión winery in 1991 and the Pintia winery in Toro in 1997.
Unico ageing: wood and bottle
Unico is aged for at least 10 years between wood and bottle: about 6 years in wood and 4 in bottle. Casks are 225-litre French and American oak barrels and large wooden vats of 20,000 to 22,000 litres.
